The first full-length feature in over a year from the grandmaster of gayporn, William Higgins, is definitely a mixed bag. Despite a top-notch cast and some superbly atmospheric moments, Big Guns is still a disappointment, registering far below the director's best work. Imitation is the problem. Here, Higgins seems to be intent on copying the highly successful style of director Matt Sterling (Bigger Than Life), running the same slick gamut of plastic glamor, stylized studio sets and crass sex between god-like physiques. It's a shame, because Higgins' forte is the exact opposite—capturing the sweetness of first-time seductions, the intense sexual passion of youth, the genuine exchange of a very special kind of excitement.
